8. Crash and burn (50/90)

This one was from a GYAWS prompt, “crash”. GYAWS stands for Get Your Ass Writing Songs, heh. Rock, this one. It sounds rather similar to my other rock attempt, Thunder, I gotta admit, I’ve got to work on figuring out ways of arranging rock songs. Lots of fun trying to make the vocals badass. I only realised after the fact that the chords and melody are almost identical to Please don’t stare, lol. That’s what happens when I almost triple my songwriting rate. Never mind, another day, another song.

Crash and burn

Don’t care for cool
Don’t care for school
Only one thing on your mind
Practice those licks
Bloody fingertips
Once more, you’ll get it this time

Crash and burn
Won’tcha ever learn
Ain’t the fall that kills ya
Just the crash and burn

Slick-handed man
Spots you and your band
Ditch those guys, you don’t need em
Come to town
I’ll show you around
I got people, you can meet ‘em

Crash and burn
Won’tcha ever learn
Ain’t the fall that kills ya
Just the crash and burn

As you step in the room
All the eyes go zoom
Pawnshop guitar played like a dream
Licking your lips
Promise in your hips
When you stop the silence screams

Crash and burn
Won’tcha ever learn
Ain’t the fall that kills ya
Watch out don’t crash and burn

Stadiums surge
All the cities merge
Thousands of people yell out your name
Every girl wants a rose
Joy up your nose
Fingers too close to the flame

Crash and burn
Won’tcha ever learn
Ain’t the fall that kills ya
Watch out don’t crash and burn

Head in the sky
Flying too high
Melt as you get near the sun
Cheers turn to jeers
Shoot up your fears
Slick-handed man eggs you on

Crash and burn
Won’tcha ever learn
Ain’t the fall that kills ya
Just the crash and burn

Crash and burn
Won’tcha ever learn
Ain’t the fall that kills ya
We’ll watch ya crash and burn

7. Please don’t stare (50/90)

Ok enough feels, time for some absolute ridiculousness (again) 😛 Another Song skirmish hour(ish)-long job. The prompt was “issue”. My alternative title is “Vampire problems” but I didn’t want to give away the punchline immediately.

Please don’t stare

Hello, nice to meet you, please come inside
How was your trip? This place is hard to find
Just take a seat, can I get you a wine?
Don’t be a stranger, we’ll be just fine

You look like your picture but even better
Love your dress, it really goes with that sweater
I do hope my profile hasn’t mislead ya
Oh shucks you gorgeous thing, god bless ya

I got issues, don’t we all
I got virtues, I’m suave and I’m tall
Got a disability, don’t be unfair
Just cus I’m a vampire? Please don’t stare!

Don’t worry now, dinner is ready
You feel faint? the wine is quite heady
Sorry I was famished so I’ve eaten already
Now sit down, drink, you’ll feel more steady

Don’t look so worried, don’t look so white
I’m doing yoga from time to time
I’m vegetarian, I’m toeing the line
Haven’t slipped up since 1879

I got issues, don’t we all
I got virtues, I’m suave and tall
Got a disability, don’t be unfair
Just cus I’m a vampire? Please don’t stare!

I just miss the taste of witty discourse
Which is why I’m on Tinder, yes of course
Looking for friends is so exhausting
With my condition, sometimes I gotta force it

My last date ran and fled
Just cus I had a little lick of her neck
I’m not made of stone
I just can’t be alone

I got issues, don’t we all
I got virtues, I’m suave and I’m tall
Got a disability, don’t be unfair
Just cus I’m a vampire? Please don’t stare!

6. Letter into the dark (50/90)

Coupla sad songs lately. I mostly like to write fiction, with elements of my own experience, but these latter ones are more personal. They don’t say anything that hasn’t been said in a million songs before, but hey, they’re mine.

Letter into the dark

Are you there, can you hear me?
How’s the weather your way?
Right here it’s quite grey
I’m doing fine, but I miss you
Wish you were here, I could kiss you

Are you there, can you hear me?
Sorry I never said
Hope you knew what you meant
I’m grateful you taught and you helped me
Selfless, you cared for and held me

A bottle thrown into the waves
A signal transmitted in space
A letter sent from the heart
Into the dark
Into the dark

Are you there, can you see me?
How’s the other side?
Hope it’s clear and it’s bright
You deserve only the best
Thanks for what we had, I was blessed

Are you there, can you see me?
Wish you’d hear what I wrote
Let me play a few notes
I just want to live to make you proud
If you were here, I’d sing out loud

A bottle thrown into the waves
A signal transmitted in space
A letter sent from the heart
Into the dark
Into the dark

Are you there, can you hear me?
As you sail away
Beyond the great veil
You’ve flown into the unknown
Rest now, now that you’re home

5. Space to breathe (50/90)

This came out of noodling on the baritone uke, which I haven’t played for a while. There’s a string buzz that drives me crazy on it.

The words recount what often happens to me: not knowing what to say in the face of someone else’s grief and pain. I often resort to the therapeutic STFU – I think silence is a powerful thing sometimes.

Space to breathe

You say you see his face at every turn
Every memory burns
You say you jump at every little noise
Just a stranger’s voice

You say nothing can fill this hole
And you feel so cold
You say you think the void is here to stay
The void that has a name

All I have to offer
All I have to give
All I’ve got is silence
And space for you to breathe

I know I will never know your grief
That would be naive
I know there is nothing I can do
But sit right here with you

I know there is nothing I can say
To make it go away
I know no one can bear your pain
Let’s share it just the same

All I have to offer
All I have to give
All I’ve got is silence
And space for you to breathe

You say you can’t stand to see your friends
Will this ever end
You say you can’t even bear to smile
A smile feels like a lie

You say you will always be this numb
You’ll never see the sun
You say there are things you left unsaid
That echo in your head

All I have to offer
All I have to give
All I’ve got is silence
And space for you to breathe

4. Don’t be cross (50/90)

Well I’ve set myself the task of 4 songs per week which means some will just be there to make up the numbers. This is one of them – already forgettable. Another old Song skirmish prompt, which was “cross”. Kind of an accidental calypso vibe. I forgot to restart my timer so this is an hour-ish song.

Don’t be cross

Promise you won’t be mad
I’ll tell you what I did
Promise you won’t be sad
I just forgot the kids
Left them at school
I am such a fool
Remembered eventually, yes I did!

Don’t be cross
It wasn’t on purpose
Don’t be cross
You’re making me nervous
I know what you’re thinking
I haven’t been drinking
Just kinda lost the plot
Don’t be cross

Promise you won’t shout
You’re filling me up with dread
Promise you won’t pout
I might have burned the bed
Lighting a smoke
I started to choke
But at least none of us are dead

Don’t be cross
It wasn’t on purpose
Don’t be cross
You’re making me nervous
I know what you’re thinking
I haven’t been drinking
Just kinda lost the plot
Don’t be cross

Won’t do it again
You’ll never need to doubt
Won’t cause you pain
Just got my head in the clouds
Ran over your foot
The bones are caput
Swear I’ll be a better spouse

Death do us part
I’ll be good, cross my heart
This is my intention
I will pay more attention

Don’t be cross
It wasn’t on purpose
Don’t be cross
You’re making me nervous
I know what you’re thinking
I haven’t been drinking
Just kinda lost the plot
Don’t be cross

Promise you won’t be mad
I’ll tell you what I did
Promise you won’t be sad
I just forgot the kids
Left them at school
I am such a fool
Remembered eventually, yes I did!

3. Tango australiano (50/90)

This was also inspired by a Song skirmish prompt – accordion – but was decidedly not a one hour effort. Took me about two days of poking at it. Not actually speaking Spanish apart from that one semester I took a decade ago was a bit of a hindrance. I apologise for mangling the language (and the tango, come to think of it)! Lots of fun rolling my R’s and making the vocals as *d r a m a* as possible though. This also features a cello solo – been meaning to include cello but my skillz aren’t, um, that great. The lyrics are a tiny bit exaggerated but I do love Spanish and Latin American music in general. Sexy as hell.

Tango australiano

No hablo español pero me gusta mucho
Its rhythmic flow
Breathes romantic soul
Cantar el amor
Cantar el dolor
En español es mejor

Tango, tango
Tango de lejos
Tango, tango
Tango australiano

Mi corazon belongs in Argentina
Where the streets
Pulse with the tango beat
Vivir para ti
Cantar para ti
Bailar, baila para mi

Tango, tango
Tango de lejos
Tango, tango
Tango australiano

El accordéon está en mi alma
Bandonéon
Will stay when all is gone
Lo que es muy triste
Lo más cruel qu’existe
Es que soy, soy de Sydney

Tango, tango
Tango de lejos
Tango, tango
Tango australiano

[instrumental]

Tango, tango
Tango de lejos
Tango, tango
Tango australiano

2. Already dead (50/90)

Whuuut a two-song day? Basically I’m using skirmishes as a warm-up to writing (hopefully) proper songs. This is another one hour song to the prompt “already dead” which was one of the previous weeks’ prompts. This is meant to be a country tune.

Already dead

If I were you I’d be right pissed off too
Fair’s fair, I did run off with your man
Your ring, your cat, and your car were brand new
Too tempting to leave them, I’ll be damned

If I were you, I’d be seeing bright red
Fair’s fair, we were best friends in school
I took what’s yours and I took to your bed
I did make a fool out of you

I’m sure if you caught me
You’d break a thing or three
I’m sure you’d shoot me in the head
But I’ll be one step ahead
You can’t kill me cus I’m already dead

If I were you, I’d be filled up with hate
Stick pins in a doll with my name
It’s only natural to be irate
In your place I’d be just the same

If you were me, though, then you would see
What I took turned to ash in my hand
Your cat smells foul and your man is quite mean
He beat me til I couldn’t stand

I’m sure if you caught me
You’d break a thing or three
I’m sure you’d shoot me in the head
But I’ll be one step ahead
You can’t kill me cus I’m already dead

I’ll slip him poison in his beer
He’ll hurl blood as black as his soul
I’ll drown your cat, don’t you fear
I’ll drive your car into a pole

I’m sure if you caught me
You’d break a thing or three
I’m sure you’d shoot me in the head
But I’ll be one step ahead
You can’t kill me cus I’m already dead

Master song list

Every song written in my whole hooman life. It all started with some special occasion songs and cascaded into several months of speedwriting challenges. Caveat auditor: this is a laboratory and a lot of three-eyed freaks are the result 😛 These demos are basic as hell, and most songs were written within hours.

My selection of Best of, such as they are:

1. Took my breath away (50/90)

Well I decided to embark on another crey crey challenge: 50/90 ie. 50 songs in 90 days. Utter masochistic insanity, but I figure…nothing to lose (except my mind), and if I reach a target of say above 30, there’s a chance a few of them might not be crap. The official 50/90 starts July 4 but I’m starting June 1 and ending August 30. I’ve got the house to myself this month, so have more freedom to make noise.

Dipping my toe back into the water with a Song Skirmish which is one of those “write and record a song in a hour” things I did earlier with Downgrade. This week’s prompt was “stinky feet”. This is rough as guts cus I’m out of practice, but let’s get the ball rolling!

Took my breath away

When we met I was sure that we’d get on
Your cheeky grin was all I could see
You made me laugh with the lift of an eyebrow
One look and I knew you were the one for me

Everything was perfect
Everything was fine
Til your socks came off
And then I realised
It drove me to the brink
Funky death by stink
I just couldn’t stay x2
Your feet took my breath away

Going out I could try to ignore it
Your feet of doom were encased in shoes
Your witty words could try and distract me
But once we got home I couldn’t hide from the truth

Everything was perfect
Everything was fine
Til your socks came off
And then I realised
It drove me to the brink
Funky death by stink
I just couldn’t stay x2
Your feet took my breath away

[instrumental]

Tried dropping clues with talc and deodorant
But you never twigged, couldn’t take the hint
Threw your shoes outside, oh so malodorous
You’d blame the dog and fetch them right back in

Everything was perfect
Everything was fine
Til your socks came off
And then I realised
It drove me to the brink
Funky death by stink
I just couldn’t stay x2
Your feet took my breath away
I just couldn’t stay x2
Your feet x3
Took my breath away
