1. Friends from the internet

Another special occasion song. Good to have a deadline. It’s my mate M’s birthday on Tuesday so I wanted this to be finished by then. It’s in her honour, but not just dedicated to her – I’ve made good mates from the internets, some dating back over a decade, some brand new in the last few months. I’m bloody grateful for these connections, they’ve opened up my world.

Friends from the internet

I was a nerdy child, first hand up at school
I was an awkward kid, oh so deeply uncool
The things I like are daggy as hell
Ukulele, Manitobans, a pretty hard sell

As I grew up and old, I learned to pass
Hide eccentricities, slip on a mask
Then went and found some freaks of a feather
Orphans and geeks all flocking together

Here’s to friends from the internet, internet
Here’s to friends from the internet, internet
Normals don’t get it, don’t try, just forget it
Cheers to friends from the internet

First steps go slow, just getting to know ya
Have you ever seen this? let me show ya
Talk through the night about everything
Vitamin D and snakes, chickens and swings

We come from everywhere over the planet
The UN of Weird, couldn’t have planned it
Different ages, religions, and tongues
Screaming together as one set of lungs

Here’s to friends from the internet, internet
Here’s to friends from the internet, internet
Got each other’s back though we haven’t even met yet
Cheers to friends from the internet

Voices in your head, and mates in your pocket
Chatting in bed, on the loo, in the office
Talking heart to heart, giggling screen to screen
Down on our knees we paint the town green

Introverts Anon meeting up in real life
Mumbled hi, look at your shoes not your eyes
Don’t worry about it, we’ll loosen up enough
Til we’re singing in the streets, in our cups

Here’s to friends from the internet, internet
Here’s to friends from the internet, internet
Normals don’t get it, don’t try, just forget it
Cheers to friends from the internet

  2. Really great start to your 10-30, I think. Fun jazzy nightclub sound and lyrics which I think a lot of people can identify with these days!
